Italian restaurant "Ciao Bella" scatters its red chairs and tables on the sand of Loh Dalam Beach, within walking distance of
Tonsai village. The scenery is breathtaking. And Italian specialties are cooked by a real Italian chef (while Italian restaurants are everywhere on the island, there is rarely an Italian chef who cooks). We highly recommend the pasta, "al dente" as they should be, and pizzas are incredibly authentic. One wonders how all these ingredients (Eg real Parma ham) have traveled so far.
Ciao Bella is also a testimony to the devastating
tsunami of December 26, 2004. A damaged restaurant sign, which has lost several letters, is displayed by Luciano Butti, owner of premises, himself a survivor of the killer waves. This piece of wood and a cup and saucer, that's all he has left. Luciano has rebuilt his restaurant almost identically.
Luciano Butti wrote a book recounting his survival, which lasted several days, isolated in the mountains of Phi Phi. You can buy the book at Ciao Bella restaurant.
