Koh Phi Phi Market
In the center of the village, at the bend of a quiet alley, is the Palace of Gourmets and Taste Explorers. All of Thailand's finest produce is offered here. Colorful tropical fruits, sometimes in odd shapes, shellfish, vegetables, fresh, cooked, smoked, breaded or fried fish...
Between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., set aside some time to wander among the stalls of Phi Phi Market, a must for locals and relatively little frequented by tourists (but why not!). It's the perfect time for a typical Thai light lunch, cooked by the women at their stalls in large woks, with meat, fish, rice, noodles, vegetables and fruit simmering inside: stir-fried, fried, in salads or soups... A few culinary tips in our "What to eat in Phi Phi" section.
The signs on the stalls aren't always in English, and you have to be daring to try new flavors. Especially since the prices are unbeatable. Starting with meat, fish and vegetable kebabs for 15 baht, sweet and savory doughnuts for around 20 baht and fresh cut fruit in punnets for only 30 baht.
It's also a chance to get in touch with the locals by trying your hand at imitating a pig or ox. Howls of laughter guaranteed: Thais love a good laugh and are not the last to joke!
As for treats, don't miss the homemade ice creams, which are not always easy to identify. Look out for a woman sitting on the floor, turning a large canister planted with small wooden sticks. If you can't find it, just follow the Thai children - they love it!
