Koh Phi Phi Viewpoint: Island Panorama

Panorama of Phi Phi from the viewpoint

From the village of Ton Sai, it takes just over half an hour to reach the breathtaking panorama offered by the Phi Phi Don viewpoint. The rather challenging hike begins as soon as you reach the last houses of the village, set against the mountain.

The short but intense climb to the viewpoint (186 meters above sea level) is a must on Phi Phi. And why not do it in the first few days after you arrive? It's a great way to get a bird's eye view of this mysterious island, only the eastern part of which is inhabited. In the distance, Phi Phi Leh looks like a steep, inhospitable rock, lost in the dark waters; little do we know that behind this rock lies one of the most beautiful beaches in Asia, perhaps the world, Maya Bay.

But first, you'll need patience and a bit of courage. The first part of the climb is also the most intense: don't worry! Steep stairs lead up the mountain. These are immediately followed by less strenuous asphalt paths that lead into the jungle, dotted here and there with exotic flowers. After about twenty minutes of walking, a small plateau appears, surrounded by a lush tropical garden. You've arrived!

Large flat rocks serve as a viewing platform (be careful of slipping!) from which you can see Phi Phi Don "from above". From here the water looks even bluer and the long tails seem to float in the air. You'll never get tired of photographing the spit of sand licked by the emerald waters of Loh Dalam and Ton Sai bays.

The highest point on the island, the viewpoint, is the safe place for the entire population to reach in the event of a tsunami threat. It is signposted all over the island: "Tsunami Evacuation Route".

The Viewpoint bar, a modest shack open to the panorama, sells canned soft drinks and a few snacks.

The best place on the island to have a drink, but you have to earn it. It takes a good 20 minutes of dizzying ascent to reach this little hut at the top of the hill, a succession of stairs (how high those stairs are!) and paved paths. From the top, the view of the crescents of Phi Phi is breathtaking. Here you can drink cans of soda and nibble on snacks. A beautiful garden, maintained by the owners, surrounds the hut.

Sunset at Phi Phi viewpoint

The best time to come is at the end of the day and wait for the sun to disappear behind the mountains. But be careful walking to the village and back at night.
